What are Digital Display Ads on the Google Display Network and How Do They Work?

February 3, 2021

Digital display ads are a type of online advertising that use visual and graphic elements, such as images and videos, to promote a product or service. The Google Display Network (GDN) is one of the most popular platforms for displaying digital display ads, reaching over 90% of global internet users.

How do Digital Display Ads work on the Google Display Network?

Digital display ads work on the Google Display Network by targeting specific audiences based on their demographics, interests, and online behavior. Advertisers can create and upload their digital display ads to the GDN, where they will be displayed on websites and mobile apps that are part of the network. These ads can be tailored to specific demographics or audiences depending on the product or service.

There are three main types of audiences you are able to target with GDN. The first is “Affinity Audiences”, which consists of 80 widespread groups based on interests, such as “gamers”, “internet shoppers”, or “football fans”. Second is “Custom Affinity Audiences”, which helps to narrow down those 80 groups further. It helps to turn a key group, such as “shopping”, into a more specific “women’s shoes” category. Lastly, “In-Market Audiences”, where you are able to actively identify customers who are looking at the specific product or service you are attempting to advertise. Each of these categories are helpful in their own scenarios for increasing ads shown to consumers.

What’s the process of adding work on Google Display Network?

Step 1

The advertiser creates a digital display ad using visual and graphic elements, such as images and videos.

Step 2

The advertiser uploads the ad to the Google Display Network, where it will be displayed on websites and mobile apps that are part of the network.

Step 3

The ad is shown to the target audience based on their demographics, interests, and online behavior. The GDN uses a variety of targeting methods, such as contextual targeting, placement targeting, and audience targeting, to reach the right audience.

Step 4

If the user is interested in the product or service being advertised, they can click on the ad to learn more or make a purchase.

Digital display ads are a powerful way to promote a product or service online. By targeting specific audiences based on their demographics, interests, and online behavior, advertisers can use the Google Display Network to display their digital display ads on websites and mobile apps that are part of the network, reaching a global audience of internet users. It is a key tool to use in marketing when you are able to reach many groups and audiences, whether it is specifically tailored to a target audience or just widespread throughout the internet.
